Whatever Katie had been expecting, it had not been this. Not that she was horrified, or insulted. She had always had a soft spot for Mike. He was the one of Tony’s friends that had always seemed interested in her. Mike would talk to her in the pub, would make an effort to ensure that she was involved, and now she knew why. “Mike, that is so lovely of you,” she told him, “but I can’t. Think how Tony would react.”

“He would never find out,” Mike lied, knowing Tony was outside listening in. “It is just us here, and all I’m asking is for one kiss so that I can have a hint of what might have been.”

“But I love Tony, and we are to be married in less than a fortnight. It would be wrong.”

Mike spotted that Katie was making excuses, which indicated a chink in her armour. He pressed the point. “If it won’t mean anything to you, because you are in love with Tony, then what is the harm? I will go away from this house happy, and you could be joyful, knowing that you have improved my life. Please. It is just one kiss.”

Katie wondered whether it would mean as little to her as Mike suggested. But she didn’t want to hurt him. It was only one kiss after all. “Okay,” she said. “But after this kiss, you must go. And we are never to talk of it again.” Deciding that it was just to be the one kiss, Katie thought she might as well make it a good one, and put her arms round Mike’s back, with one of her hands reaching the top of his head, pulling Mike down to her face. Mike closed the gap between them, so that their bodies were pressed against each other. Both were aware that Katy was only wearing a bathrobe and her breasts were crushed into Mike’s chest. Their mouths met, and Katy felt a thrill of disobedience. She opened her mouth slightly and felt Mike’s tongue meet her own. His hands caressed down her back, and hers clung tighter to his head and body. Two minutes passed without either of them breaking the kiss. Eventually Katy let go and said, “Wow.”

Does Mike keep his part of the bargain with Tony or should we join Tony?
