It seems that then biology major and college student Trever Harolds was secretly trying to give himself animal powers- and his expirements worked only too well. Recovered research suggests the goal was the ability to take on the attributes of any animal who's DNA he's injected directly into himself. The problem was that this was too powerful, the powers and attributes wouldn't go away and it became not just any animal's DNA he injected himself with but any living thing he came in contact with.
With his intelligence fading he did attempt to cure himself, but in the end he only succeeded in slowing the transformations and limiting them to combinations that don't jeopardize his survival. Now known as MENAGERIE, his DNA bounces back and forth around the animal kingdom- giving him the combined attributes of 2 to 7 seemingly random animals along with their pooled instincts, drowning out his intelligence almost completely. Whether or not he's aware of his actions is debatable, but what is known is that in the 15 years since the expirement that gave him his powers he's been an unstoppable force, acting entirely on instinct as he striking quickly then disappearing into the wilderness.
Post-crime scene analysis is difficult given his ever-shifting DNA and appearence but he seems to consider people one of his sources of food. The FBI estimates that in the 15 years since the expirements he's killed and eaten at least 170 men and savagely raped at least 300 women. Despite the shifting DNA he seems to not only still be compatible with humans but highly fertile as a woman that he has raped will become pregnant almost half of the time. The resulting children will at first appear to be normal but when they begin puberty they will mutate into creatures with similiar attributes to what MENAGERIE displayed when he raped their mothers. Interestingly, the post-mutation children report that while their instincts have been heightened they still have their intellegence, considered the strongest peice of evidence that Menagerie may be fully aware of his actions. |
