Druuna | darrowhk | 48

Druuna decided against going out; she had experienced plenty of adventure for now, and had no doubt that she would experience more in short order.

“You know what Janette, how about I tell you about what's out there?”

Druuna and Janette found a quiet corner of the guildhall and started talking. Druuna started telling Janette about everything that had happened, but subtlety steered the conversation towards Janette and her past. Pretty soon, Druuna was just sitting and listening.

Janette's father had died not too long ago, her mother a few years before that. Janette had been raised in a small city to the north; Druuna had never heard of it before. Her father had been ill for many years, but was still able to support the family. After Janette's mother had died, her father's illness grew steadily worse, and Janette had to spend the last year supporting him. Three months ago, he passed away.

“I just had to get out of there. I didn't have any other family or friends, and, I mean- I think I just needed to go someplace new; where I could get my mind off of things and start something new.”

Janette stared at her drink for a moment, seemingly remembering her grief.

Druuna felt a little bit of guilt for leading her hear. Maybe telling her story would be good for her in the long run, though.

“Well, maybe we should go start something new?” said Druuna, with a wink. Maybe it wasn't too late to go out after all.

Janette popped into her room to grab “some stuff” while Druuna made some thought about where to go. She pulled out a metal box from under her bed, unlocking it and opening it up to check on the contents inside. She closed it again and locked it with a different key that the one she had opened it with.

The box was designed to set itself on fire if the lock was either fooled with, or even if the first key was used to unlock it, dumping a small bit of oil on the papers inside to ensure that they burned. It would be difficult to explain why she had such a thing if anybody from the guild did trigger it, but still much easier than to explain the letters she had if discovered. Besides, she could always be to “outraged” that somebody had been messing with her things to be expected to explain.

She put the box back under her bed and exited her room, smiling at Druuna. Druuna would be perfect.

How thickens the plot?

          To the market, for supplies.
