You look down at Katherine and ask again, "will you give me a second chance?"
She continues to stare down at her feet and says, "FINE! Let's talk."
You sit down beside her on the cold cement curb and her tears have magically stopped running. You move close to her and put your arm around behind her. Kat turns her face to yours and smiles. You wonder why the hell she is smiling, she just walked in on you cheating on her! Although there was never any formal commitment made that joined you and her as boyfriend-girlfriend. For God's sake you were just prom dates!
"Listen," she asks, "there are things about me that you don't know."
You wonder what she is talking about and remain silent to find out.
"I'll explain," she pauses then continues, "Sarah didn't throw the contest all by herself."
You are completely clue-less and Katherine can see that. "I am not sure I understand?" you say.
There is a moment where neither of you speaks. You think Kat is arranging her words in her mind before speaking them. She brushes her long hair out of her face and uses the back of her hand to wipe some of the make-up off. She places the same hand on your knee; you look down on the smear of black mascara.
"I helped her, it really had nothing to do with her. It was all my idea. I wanted to know if you'd be faithful to me, kind of a test," she tells you.
Inside your head you laugh thinking about how you really feel about the 'test' and that Sarah should be giving you an A-grade for it.
"I guess I failed huh?" you joke. "So let me see if I get this right, you doubted me and that is what this is all about?" you ask.
"I am not sure how to put this," Kat hesitates. "You didn't fail the test. There really isn't a right or wrong way about it. I just needed to know if you would do it."
You feel kind of relieved but horrified at the same time. Katherine isn't really the girl you thought she was. Why did she go through all this trouble with the test and Sarah?
"I have a secret and I need to tell you," Kat says.
