Watching the Neighbors | Zigurat | 9

Mark Stevens looked up from his small bowl of soup, wondering who was calling on him. Perhaps a door-to-door saleswoman hungry for a good fucking, he smirked as he stood up from the kitchen table. With a quick glance at the grandfather clock in the living room, he saw that it was almost six. Wondering where the day had gone since Jenny had left, the middle-aged man swung open his front door and gasped.

“Mr. Stevens,” Mrs. Griffith said flatly, her ice blue eyes flashing.

“Um, good evening,” her neighbor said nervously, wary of the petite woman standing on his porch.

“Well?” she said, tapping her fingers above her elbow, her arms crossed over her chest.

“Uh, what can I do for you?” Mark asked, tugging at the collar of his white button-down.

“Are you going to invite me in?” Mrs. Griffith said frostily.

“Oh, um,” he blushed. “Ah, please come in and, er, make yourself comfortable.”

With a quick scowl, his neighbor stepped through the doorway, passing the middle-aged man on her way to his kitchen. As he closed the door, Mark was amazed that she had given birth to a daughter like Julie. The woman barely stood as tall as his chest and she obviously wasn’t the source of her daughter’s bosom either.

“So, what brings you by?” he asked, stepping into the kitchen as the mother of his afternoon fuck sat down in his former seat.

“I think you know,” Julie’s mother sniffed.

“Ah,” Mark grimaced. “She, um, is legal, you know, being nineteen after all.”

“That’s not the issue,” she said, her eyes flicking about the kitchen. “I am perfectly aware of my daughter’s… promiscuity. I also know full well that there is nothing that I can do about it.”

“Is this a warning then? Are you telling to me to stay away from your little girl?”

“She hasn’t been a little girl for a long time, Mr. Stevens,” his neighbor said harshly.

“Oo-kay,” Mark said. “Is she carrying a, um, STD or something then?”

“I hope Julie knows to be careful,” she sniffed, her gaze settling upon the bay window. “But if she isn’t taking any precautions, I wouldn’t know.”

“Well,” he said. “Why the sudden visit to my house then? To be honest, I don’t understand why you are here. Especially since your behavior appears… contrary to typical parental reactions, given the situation this afternoon.”

Why had Julie's mother stopped by?
