The Briefcase | RicoLouis | 3

“Morning John.” Thomas said as he entered the pawn shop. John and Thomas’s dad used to be friends before his dad died. Thomas liked to keep in touch.

“Thomas you old son of a gun what are you doing here.” The pawn shop owner said as he came out from behind the counter.

“Old, You looked in the mirror lately.” He said with a grin. Of course Thomas was getting up there now he was just over forty. Thomas shook his hand.

“Of course not, The beauty about getting old is that your eyesight fades.” John said. Now an old man in his sixties. Though he still seemed pretty spry for an old man.

“Tell me about it.” Thomas said with a grin

“So how is my boy doing.” Thomas said looking around for James. Thomas had been the arresting officer when James was caught and had talked the judge into giving the boy a chance.

“Just fine. He is in the back checking stock.” John said with a smile.

“Thanks for taking him on.” Thomas said with a smile.

“Hell its actually working out better for me. Its nice to have someone to do all the work around here.” John said. Thomas was glad to here that.

“Well at least he is working instead of getting in trouble.” Thomas added.

“What about yourself, you still pushing papers behind a desk?” It had been years since Thomas had went out on a case, not since the accident.

“Hey at least its safe.” He said with a not to convincing tone. Thomas missed it in his heart.

“Your to good of a cop to be behind a desk Tom.” John said putting a hand on his shoulder.

“Yea, yea old man.” Yea said with a grin.

“Well I better get back to the station but it was good seeing you.” He said. He said his goodbyes and headed for the door when a reflection caught his eye. He stopped and reached up onto a shelf where he pulled down a pair of reading glasses nestled between a binocular and an old camera.

“See something you like?” John said.

“Yea speaking of eye sight.” He said holding up the glasses. His own eyes where going bad and he had lost the reading glasses he had. He put them on to check them and then pulled them back off looking at them in his hand.

“I swear these look familiar.” He said trying to remember. It was as if he had seen someone he knew wear a pair but he couldn’t remember who.

“How much?” He said holding them up.

“I’ll give you the police discount, normally there one dollar so…” John said as he looked up at the ceiling doing the math in his head.

“One fifty.” He said as he looked back at Thomas with a grin.

“Ha. Ha.” Thomas went for his wallet but the old shop keeper just held up his hand.

“Take them there hardly worth the shelf space.” He said with a smile.

“You sure.” Thomas Said.

“Yea.” John said

“Thanks John. I will come back by sometime when I have more time to talk.” He said as he went out the door and headed back for the station.
