I can't believe I made it past Bill only to be busted by Karl my department manager. He has always had it in for me, giving me the crappiest assignments and the cheapest accounts. He was about 45 or 50 and super conservative. He barely hid the fact that he thought it was inappropriate for women to be in the work force and he thought it even less appropriate that they be anything but secretaries. What made things even worse was that I was good at my job and he thought I was gunning for his job. This was pretty much true. He did seem to think that I was sleeping my way to a promotion though, and that was completely untrue.
The only thing that had saved me from some half-baked excuse to fire me was that he was related to my rommate. She was his cousin-in-law or second cousin or something like that. She told me that most of the family was very close and firing me would cause her to have problems with the rent. He wouldn't do that.
I had a feeling though that this was going to be too much for such a fragile family bond and it was probably going to go badly for me. My only hope was to walk past him before he recovered and hide from him for the rest of the day.
I start walking toward the door and he remains google-eyed. I get past him with no further reaction and I think to myself that this might work. The final test is to lock my car with the remote and hope the beep doesn't disturb him. I push the button ... |
