A New Dawn | citrusmirakel | 7

Dawn wanted to kiss her, to touch her, to feel a bit of Kelly's indescribable something against every exposed part of her body, but as Kelly looked at her softly, waiting for a response, Dawn felt those pleas for attention stop in the back of her throat. She needed to ask Kelly for something, but she couldn't ask for what she was really craving.

"Could I... could I have a cigarette?"

Kelly looked at Dawn with a wry smile. "You don't smoke, do you."

"No, but... you know, it's been a day." There was a rapid of nervousness under Dawn's voice, that eluded all efforts of concealment. "But uh... you know, it's getting better."

Kelly's smile widened some, and she shook a Chesterfield halfway out of her pack, which Dawn slipped between her fingers "Careful now," Kelly said. "That's an unfiltered cigarette."

"Oh." Dawn glanced down at the full cylinder of tobacco. "So, which end do I smoke?"

"Here." Kelly took the cigarette out of her hand, and gently placed it between her lips. With Dawn looking over at her, Kelly flipped open the Zippo and lit the first cigarette Dawn had ever smoked.

Naturally, she coughed like an old man.

Dawn was having troubles concentrating on the road in front of her as she sputtered the cigarette onto the floor, right next to the gas petal.

"Shit!" Dawn shouted. "Fuck! Oh, shit!"

Kelly dipped down and retrieved the cigarette, checking it for detritus and then putting it into her own mouth. "Tell you what." She said. "Let's get us both to my place alive, and then if you're still interested, you can try to look cool smoking."

"Deal." Dawn said with a nervous smile. "Where, uh... where am I taking you?"

"35th and Lyndale" Dawn said, dabbing her finger on the liquid now settling into her jeans. "I just need to get these jeans off. I smell like rye enough as it is."

Reaching their location, Dawn pulled the car along the shoulder of the road and looked at Kelly expectantly.

"Tell you what," Kelly said, car door half open. "Why don't you come inside for a minute. I make a better manhattan that that shithole Tony's does any day, and cheaper, too."

Dawn felt afraid at this sense of abandon before her, but simultanieously intrigued by what it may lead to. A part of her actually wanted to speed away and drive straight home, but then there was that other part that was looking into Kelly's eyes...

Does dawn go inside?
