You are an experienced sailor. You've crewed up and down the east and west coast of the US since you were just a teenager. Now you're 24 and you've qualified for your master's ticket. A former employer has recommended you to a friend and now this potential employer is on the phone.
"Hi this is Max Bucks. I've got a little yacht that I need taken across to Tahiti for the summer season. I'll be heading out there for my summer vacation and I want to use the Sea Nymph as my home away from home."
This guy sounds like he's loaded, he wants you to sail his yacht from Orange County on the coast of California to the island paradise of Tahiti just so he can use it to swan around in. But you're not complaining, not only will this job pay well but it will also be the voyage of a lifetime through some of the most beautiful seas on the planet.
" Listen , I chose you for this job because you came highly recommended by a friend of mine. He said not only are you a good sailor but your very trustworthy. I'd hate if anything were to happen to my little Sea Nymph, you know what a boat means to a man, she's like a lover, sensuous and sleek, beautiful to behold, but she'll throw you to the sea if she thinks your unfaithful."
"Yes of course Mr. Bucks" you say. Gee this guy likes the sound of his own voice but you won't have to listen to him when you're out at sea, miles from any coast.
" So what do ya say my boy, will you take the job? Anything you need for the voyage name it, money's no object."
"Yes I'll take the job Mr. Bucks and I'll make sure your yacht gets to Tahiti in ship-shape fashion."
"Good my boy, good."
You enquire, "Should I see about hiring a crew for the trip out sir?"
"That's not necessary my boy. My daughter and some of her friends have decided it would be a fun way to start their summer by crewing for you. They've all sailed before so they should be no problem. I've told her, "Hunny you do exactly as the captain tells you, no arguments" so everything will be fine."
"Oh right, well that's great" you say. Oh great! The best trip of my career so far and now I find out that I'm going to be babysitting some spoilt rich college kids. |
