Curse | A.Dent | 21

The door to the Jones’ house opens Scooter is relieved to not see anyone in sight. Leaving the envelope with evidence of the mysterious happenings that befell the previous owners will be easier than he thought, Scooter grinned. That relief quickly morphs into a feeling of despair as spies what looks like a family picture of the Jones. Scooter sees the smiling faces of Bobby, Tina, and then book ending the two younger Jones are two gorgeous, huge chested woman. On the left is Deborah Jones, and on the right, for some inexplicable reason, was his own mother!

A closer look at the picture unnerved poor Scooter even more. For one, the picture was dated a couple years ago. That’s impossible, isn't it? The Jones had only just moved into the neighborhood, how could his mother have known them before? But what really bothered Scooter was that his mother looked a little different. Christine looked a little younger than she should, even given the date on the picture, and her hair was lighter. In fact, it almost looked like his mother and Deborah were sisters, possibly even twins.

“This must be some sort of trick!” Scooter exclaimed. “That bastard Bobby must have done something with photoshop, just to mess with me!” The stunned teen stumbled further into Jones’ house, but every step he took further shattered his reality. There were more pictures his mother and the Jones. High school photos of the two older woman, pictures of Christine at Bobby and Tina’s school events and what looked like family reunions. Scooter continued to write this off photoshop, though every subsequent picture made that possibility seem more unlikely. He saw some of his mother’s favorite clothes in the laundry hamper in the hallway, but Bobby was in his house last night, right? Maybe he picked them up on his way out. And the mail on the kitchen counter, addressed to Christine Jones well it did look like very official government letterhead, but that could be forged…

It was becoming harder and harder to attribute all of this to some petty prank on behalf of Bobby Jones. This was way too elaborate for the short term that he would have had to organize this. Scooter rushed to the kitchen sink to get some water. It was this act of desperation that finally proved to be too much. On the drying rack was his mother’s favorite mug. A simple blue and green striped coffee mug, but it was definitely the same mug that Scooter had seen his mother drinking coffee out of each morning, for as far back as he could remember. There was no way that Bobby could have known its significance.

Scooter staggered away from the sink, his mother’s mug still in his hands. As he stumbled towards the door, he remembered the ominous message that his printer had sitting in its tray when he woke: “You were warned.”

“No…,” Scooter mumbled, “it can’t be…Mom…”

With that Scooter collapsed to the floor as darkness enveloped him.

It was there, passed out on the entry way floor, clutching that coffee mug that the Jones family found Scooter when they came downstairs.
