Things had been going really well so far with Bernie and as far as anyone knew, Bernie included, Gary was totally taken with her. Deep down Gary wasn’t as head-over-heels as everyone thought he was. About a fortnight before he and Bernie had started dating, Gary had gone out with a girl called Laura that he had met through a friend of his. There had been an instant attraction between the two. Laura’s schedule was so frantically busy that they had only managed two dates but in that time Gary had fallen for Laura hard. Then however Laura had been unable to get any more time free to Gary again. He waited for things to free up and had started spending time with Bernie to keep himself occupied while waiting for Laura. The time he spend with Bernie had allowed a fondness for her to grow that Gary thought would mean the end of his attraction to Laura and for a time it did. He grew to love Bernie even if he knew she was a whole lot more in love with him.
And so things had continued up until two nights ago when he had received a text message on his mobile from Laura. Gary had been spending the night with Bernie watching movies together when out of the blue he received the message. He was caught a little off guard as he hadn’t been expecting to hear from her and also as he didn’t want Bernie to know he had been less interested than he allowed her to believe. He had a brief conversation with Laura via text messages with the general jist being that she had a place of her own now and wanted Gary to come by sometime and check it out. He had messaged back saying that he would love to, saying he would call her in a couple of days before making excuses that he was busy and couldn’t send too many messages at that point in time.
And so Gary had been fighting an internal battle with his conscience for the past two days. He had grown to care for Bernie a lot but the contact with Laura had ignited the old desire once again. He had debated not calling Laura and letting everything move on but at the same time his curiosity burned to find out what would happen if he went and had a look at her place.
In the end Gary made up his mind and had dialed the number into his phone and pressed the call button. When Laura picked up and said hello Gary briefly paused not knowing what to say. |
