You figure it'll be less hassle dealing with delivering to houses rather than businesses, and say you'll take the east side.
"Okay ," says your boss brightly, passing you a satchel full of packages, "There's seven deliveries for the East side today. Do them in any order you like, but make sure you get signatures for them all, or we're both in trouble. If you're lucky, you'll be back here for lunchtime."
"No problem!" you reply happily, shouldering the satchel and strolling out into the sunny day. This job is going to be a breeze, you think, looking through the list of addresses your boss gave you.
Okay, there's three packages for the middle class area, two for the somewhat shabbier council estate, and two addresses that your recognize straight off.
One is for 15 Fulbright Lane - but that's a misnomer for sure. It's at the far end of the council estate, but there's hardly any of those houses lived in now. A *terrible* family called the Gleesons lives there - you haven't met any of them yet, but you've heard people in the village talking about them. They chased out most of their neighbours with their awful behaviour, and the council wanted to knock down the streets around them and pretty much start over, but they refused to move. Now their house is pretty much the only occupied on the the whole street. You're feeling more than a little nervous about having to go there.
The other is for Gaswell House, a big, spooky old Victorian manse near the end of the town. The woman who lives there, you've heard her referred to as "the Haunted Widow", and looks as is she's trying hard for a career as a Morticia Addams impersonator. She has at least one daughter too, you've heard, but you've never seen her.
A dog barks and jerks you out of your thoughts. Okay. Where first, go to either the posh or rough estate and deliver the packages there, or go take care of one of the ones that you know exactly where they are. |
