She thought silently to herself for a few minutes, before turning to look me square in the eyes.
"What's the problem?!" I asked her. "Of COURSE you can trust me! We're family!"
"Well... That's just it," she said. "Because we're family, I know I can trust you. But you might not want to be part of our family when you hear what I have to tell you."
"What could the secret POSSIBLY be that would make me react that way?!" I asked her.
"We're very hesitant to trust strangers in this family," she started.
"I can understand that!" I told her. "You're a lawyer, so you want to keep your whole family on the right side of the law."
"True," she told me hesitantly, "but that's not it. After Jade was born, their father told me he didn't want any more children. We both were steadfast in our refusal to get 'fixed', however, so we've remained a bit... Well... 'Broken'."
"What do you mean?!" I asked, though not completely sure I wanted the answer. |
