You come back to the bar with a small tray of drinks.

You come back to the table to find Kate and Viola have maneuvered so that they’re sitting next to each other and are whispering back and forth. Meryl and Julie were talking loudly about Julie’s first year of college, and Marshall was just sitting quietly, being ignored.

“Here are your drinks, ladies and gentleman,” you say, sitting down across from Viola and Kate.

You start conversing with the Kate and Viola, being as charming as you can. Like a pro, you’re careful to give Kate the majority of your attention. After the afternoon, you don’t want to spoil what you feel like is a certain evening of fun because you see a new pretty face. On the other hand, you definitely don’t want to close off an appealing plan B, or better, a plan A+1, so you’re sure to not make Viola feel like a third wheel.

Everyone at the table is drinking enthusiastically, and before long, Marshall is sent to the bar for round 2 of drinks. As round 2 of drinks comes to a close, everyone is starting to get a little tipsy, and Viola is apparently a little warm under her cardigan. She takes it off, and underneath she’s wearing a cute short sleeved shirt with a button collar.

You volunteer to go get round 3 of drinks, which you manage successfully. When you come back from the bar, the situation is almost the same as the first time, except this time Kate has an arm over Viola’s shoulder as she is whispering, and seems to be leaning in to her a little more than necessary. You say a silent prayer to the patron saint of burgeoning threesomes.

Meanwhile, since the bar is crowded with eligible men and women, Marshall decides to drift around the bar, and a random dude has approached Meryl and Julie and is chatting them up. You just stay where you are, making increasingly raucous conversation with Viola and Kate. Everyone’s having a good time, and pleasant buzzes are starting to turn in to inhibition lowering drunkenness. Julie has a big smile on her face, and Meryl seems to be in to the guy who has come to chat them up. People’s drinks are approaching empty, and you’re wondering whether it’s time to put take things to the next level and bring some shots from the bar.

Time to have some shots?

          Shots!

Slow and steady wins the race.
