Her reaction left me wondering.
"Probably?!" I asked. "What do you mean, 'probably'?!"
"Well," she said, "I still live in town, but I doubt you do."
She paused, looking down suddenly.
"I remember you talked a lot in school about wanting to get away from here," she said.
"Yeah," I said, also recalling. "Though I assure you I wouldn't have if you had paid any attention to me!"
"I wish I had!" she said, before leaning in to kiss me.
We spent the rest of the event together, and she met me at my hotel that evening. However, when I awoke the next morning, she was gone.
----
Two years later, nothing much had changed; I was still living in the same new town, working the same job, and wishing she hadn't been married when we (quite literally) hooked-up.
Suddenly, I heard the phone ring, and ran to answer it.
"?" the voice asked.
"Yeah?" I replied.
"This is Amber!" she said.
We talked for a while, and agreed to meet at the bar of her hotel. That evening, we had dinner and drinks, before she invited me up to her room. As I closed the door behind me, I took a minute to reflect on everything.
"You know," I told her, "I can't tell you how great it is to see you again!"
"Yeah!" she agreed. This might be the happiest I've been since I got divorced!"
I was surprised once again by her words. I approached her slowly.
"I'm sorry," I told her.
"It's OK, ," she said. "He turned-out to be an abusive drunk. I feel much better since I got rid of him... Oh, and something else."
"What's that?" I asked.
"You'll see," she said, before she nudged me back, and brought her hands up around the straps of her dress. |
