2759: A New Odyssey | joachim | 1

It's amazing sometimes; how everything can change merely thanks to a small group of people.

In the mid-22nd century, a small group of scientists working together made a technological breakthrough in trying to solve the energy crisis. Developing a device that was essentially a hybrid of a fusion reactor and a ramscoop, this piece of technology could, in theory, provide endless power sources to buildings, homes, etc. Fortunately, the scientists had morals, so they managed to keep things from getting out of hand with their invention.

Naturally, space travel was one of the aspects for this energy device, and many ships were designed. Utilizing stasis booths (since everybody knows that light is the universal speed limit), the hope was that the explorers would make contact with intelligent life.

They didn't. They didn't even meet any mentally-challenged life. As depressing as it was, Earth was the only world life had ever appeared on. So, space travel was re-designed for traveling throughout the solar system instead. As of the time of this writing, the UN is in the planning stages of moving out of this system (although this won't happen for another century or so).

The creation of the energy device, however, acted as the spark that launched a thousand ideas. Other scientists started to think, "If these guys can make this technological breakthrough, why can't we do the same?" So, for the next several centuries, it seemed that the only limit science had was that of the imagination.

By 2759, things have become a bit different. Various planets and moons in the solar system have been colonized, technology is practically unlimited, and people are living (on average) to about 220 years old, as well as having higher standards of living. Machines do a majority of difficult manual labor; if an individual has a career, they're doing it because they want to, not because of financial reasons.

This extra spare time has had an effect on many people's social lives. By the 28th century, sexual activity is not frowned upon to say the least. Many individuals have sex partners whenever the urge took them; in this culture, sex was of no more importance than eating when you were hungry or sleeping when tired. And many people have an unlimited appetite for international cuisine (so to speak). Recreational and performance enhancing drug use is also commonplace, and many people have been using various types of drugs for years.

Naturally, these advancements in science have occasionally resulted in individuals developing paranormal abilities (whether they're mutants, GELFs, "lab rats", etc.), and various planet law-enforcement have made some of these individuals freelance "deputies" to help out when needed.

That being said, enjoy your time throughout the region.
