He saw the morning newspaper was sitting on the table in front of him, and he riffled through it quickly, extracting the funny pages as his mother sat his plate down in front of him.
He made small talk with his mom while he ate and read the comics, his sisters eventually coming downstairs as well. They were dressed in their school uniforms (all three of them went to the same Catholic high school, St, Andrew's) of plaid kilts and white blouses. He idly noticed that both of them were wearing white, knee-high stockings with the mandatory patent leather shoes (John suspected that the Administrative Board, which was mostly men, kept that part of the uniform so they could look up the school girls' skirts); the stockings themselves were allowed, but not part of the mandatory uniform for girls at St. Andrew's.
He finished his breakfast soon afterward and headed upstairs to take a shower and then get dressed for school. |
