She held her breath until her lungs felt like they were on fire. She tried to wiggle around, and succeeded in glimpsing a diffused beam of light ahead of the dark shape before her. Its powerful legs undulated like a dolphin. She cursed herself for leaving the snorkel, and was infuriated that the huge, powerful hand on her thigh was clamping the diving knife firmly to her leg.
Suddenly, they dipped, and with a massive kick, exploded out of the water into a vast, underground cavern. Sandy clung to it as they soared through the air, landing on wet smooth rock. A loud rumble echoed throughout the cavern. She immediately knew that she was either under the river, or above an underground one. "Damn, this guy has one weird wetsuit" she thought, feeling the slightly slimy, textured skin. The light was from a hole far above them. She shook the water from her hair and brushed it back. The "wetsuit" shimmered in the faint light, but before she could see it clearly, she was unceremoniously dumped onto the rocks.
She scrambled for the knife, drew it, and turned on one knee. She barely caught its sillouette sliding into the shadows beyond the single beam of light. She held the knife out, defiantly, to the darkess. She watched the refracted beams glimmer, sending lazy patterns over everything she could see, which was about a 20 foot radius consisting of the rock she was on, the water behind her, and her kidnapper's sillouette, padding away from her until it too faded into the darkness.
In the distance, she saw another spot of rock illuminated by what looked like a much larger hole in the cavern ceiling. It was in the opposite direction of the way she had her attacker go, but over 100 yards of darkness separated the pool of light she was in, and the one farther down. |
