A College Girl To Be... | daciasdesire | 13

Jack and Sarah began to make their way up the car park, passing the contested vehicles as they went. Sarah was amazed at the number of cars that were riddled with bullet holes. Was the whole city gripped in the midst of a crime wave and she hadn't even noticed? Sure she had gone to an exclusive school and her home life had been quite sheltered but it wasn't until she had started helping the CIA that she had really considered anything outside of her own circle of existence. She decided she would from now on make a determined effort to know what is going on in the world outside he existance.

Happy with her new decision Sarah came to the first of the available cars and began to look around. Almost immediately Jack found something that took his fancy and ran to inspect the vehicle. "Oh, ooh. Come check this out Sarah."
Sarah followed interested in what had him so excited. "What is it?" she asked. "It looks like a tank."
"It's a Hum-Vee. Man, I can't believe they would have one of these. You seriously have to pick this. We have them at the CIA and they're awesome. I remember one time we did a raid on a drug lab and we were chasing some guys that were trying to escape and we drove the Hummer right through a wall and it didn't even leave a scratch. Ah and there was this other time..." Sarah allowed Jack to continue on as she walked away, blocking his ramblings out of her mind.

There must have been a couple hundred cars to pick from but she couldn't settle on anything she liked. They were either too big like the Hum-Vee, broken down and rusted out, covered in bloodstains or just too boring. Really, what eighteen-year-old girl wanted to be seen driving around in an eight seater family wagon? Were bored housewives going out on crime sprees in order to make up for a dull home life?

Sarah was beginning to despair that she would never find anything that she liked when tucked away in a dark cover at the very top of the fourth floor was an object covered in a dusty tarpaulin. Sarah gathered from the outline that the car wasn't overly large, just the right size for a young girl like herself. From the shape it didn't look like the car had a roof either, just a bulge where she guessed the windshield would be. Sarah took a hold of one corner of the cover and started to draw it away. A cloud of disturbed dust made her cough violently. Then when she saw for the very first time what a little beauty she had found beneath the sheet Sarah's breath was drawn in again making her wheeze even harder.

She rushed back down the car park passing Jack who was stilling admiring the Hummer on her way to see the policeman she had seen earlier. She burst into the offices almost beside herself with anticipation. "I've found it! I've found the perfect car."
The man looked up from his pile of paperwork. "That's terrific. Which one was it?" he asked.
"It was all the way up on the fourth floor underneath a cover," she gushed excitedly.
An impressed smile formed on the man's face. "Well that is a little gem of a car. We must have had that going on thirty years. From what I can recall we got that in from a gang of street racers. They would race on the highways out of town for pink slips. A 1956 Corvette convertible. My uncle had one just the same only his was red not blue. They would have done it up real nice if they were going to be racing in it. I bet it must have had a top speed of one hundred, maybe one-ten miles an hour. Pretty fast for its day. Damned if I can think of where the keys would be. My best guess would be in one of the old storage boxes in the basement. Give me a moment and i'll go look for you."

It was half an hour before the man returned with an old set of keys. "Here you go, took some finding they did. I'd doubt it would start anymore without some working being done to it. You could give it a try though."
Sarah took the keys from the man and together they went back to the car. The dust had settled but it still covered the insides of the car, even with it being under a tarpaulin for thirty years. Sarah hoped into the driver's seat with her heart thumping in her chest. If this started she would have a car of her very own. As if fate itself was smiling on her the car roared into life with the very first turn of the ignition.
"Well I'll be," the man muttered in amazement.
"Can I take it?" Sarah asked eager to go for a spin.
"Sure, take it for a test-drive and if you like it come back this afternoon and we'll fill out the forms."

Sarah eased the stick into reverse and the engine that had been idling gentle came to life in a throbbing growl as she backed from the parking space before taking off with a shriek as Sarah spun the wheels for a second. She stopped in front of the Hum-Vee and gave jack a toot of the horn to draw his attention away from the oversize monster.
"What's that?" Jack asked surprised by Sarah's arrival.
"It's my new car. Come on, we're going for a drive," she said as he climbed in next to her.

How does the test-drive go?

          Gloriously.
