John Almighty | Murakami | 6

David was having a horrible day at work. He was late getting in, got chewed out by his boss for nearly missing a meeting, and then Jenny, one of the best looking women in his office and also the bitchiest, had played a cruel trick on him, embarrassing him in front of the whole office.

Unbeknownst to him, a universe away, John had a thought.

Desciding he needed a drink, David went to the lunchroom, ignoring the sniggers as he walked past. His wallet was stuck in his pocket, and he had to empty it onto the table to get it out. As he turned to the vending machine and thought about what to get, Gina, an intern, absentmindedly grabbed the pen that had been in his pocket and walked off with it. David pulled his doctor pepper out of the machine, put his wallet back and he went to grab the rest of his thing. His pen was gone, but in it's place, he noticed an expensive looking gold pen lying there instead.

"A pen's a pen,," He thought and grabbed it, making his way back to his cubicle, "guess I'll try it out." He grabbed a nearby pad of paper and scribbled on the pad for a second to make sure the pen worked, then wrote out, "today, I'll get promoted." The motivational stuff was something his psychiatrist had suggested , but he did it more for a laugh than any supposed 'catharsis' it was supposed to bring him. He had worked here for 7 years without a promotion, and had little hope of getting one at this point.

He grabbed a stack of reports and headed for his manager's office; he had some figures that were important to the next business deal, and he wanted top get them done before anything else went wrong.

David walked into Joe's office and handed him the reports. Joe actually looked pleased for a change, which slightly creeped David out.

Smiling, Joe looked back up at David. "Good Job Dave. I want you to head the negotiations with this new account."

Dave just stared at him. "Me? I don't know anything about...I mean, just this morning you said..."

"It will be double your current salary, and you'll get Mike's office. He transferred out yesterday." Joe interrupted.

David smiled confusedly. Hadn't he just seen Mike earlier today? "Um.. well, that is,...Thank you sir!" he said, ending perhaps a bit too forcefully.

Joe shook his hand and continued. "Oh, and Jodie, Mike's secretary, is under you now."

Dave walked back to his cubicle, wondering what was going on. As he packed up his things for a quick move to his new office, he noticed the sticky pad he had wrtten on before...

Is it the power of positive thinking? Magic? How smart is Dave anyway?
